Project Ex Review Wheverever You Will Go - Capital Radio Metal Hammer, Page 87, July 2002 Is there actually enough room on the surface of the Earth for another "passionate and emotional" slow ballad Alice in chains tribute band? You can almost see the scenes in the boardroom as the CEO demands of his A&R staff: "FIND ME A BAND WHO ARE EXACTLY LIKE STAIND!" As Nickleback are to Staind, The Calling are to Nickleback. Next in line, all LA teen drama good looks and sensitive guy lyrics about love and feeling depressed and stuff. Can't fail. A minor US hit with "Wherever you will go" trailed the way for this whole album of tortured, soleful and tuneful tunes, all minor chords and deep, deep sad bloke vocals, all operatic crescendos of angst. These bands are infact a new manifestation of metal's nadir, the slow pwerful ballad. How soon a cover of Poison's "Every rose has its thorn"? TOMMY UDO [6/10] hmv.co.uk March 2002 Cut from the same super-smooth cloth as the likes of Creed and Staind, LA quintet the Calling - Alex Band (vocals), Aaron Kamin and Sean Woolstenhulme (guitars), Billy Mohler (bass) and Nate Wood (drums) - look set to follow their contemporaries to the top of the UK charts. Young and well scrubbed enough to pass for a boy band, yet angst-ridden enough to fit in with the latest round of semi-hard rockers, their debut album 'Camino Palmero' radiates with timeless melodies, strident guitar hooks andcleverly addictive songwriting. Produced by Marc Tanner (with eight tracks mixed by Chris Lord-Alge), highlights include 'Wherever You Will Go' (as featured in the film 'Coyote Ugly'), 'Stigmatized' and Adrienne', a torch song for the girl that broke your heart. amazon.co.uk April 2002 The most fantastic new band this decade... The Calling are the best new band of the decade! This talented LA based quintet have already taken America by storm, now they are ready to take on the UK. This albumn is an stunning set of 12 songs written by lead singer Alex band and guitarist Aaron Kumin. They are wonderfully compiled, featuring the incredible voice of Alex Band and the power guitar riffs these songs are sure to send a tingle down your spine. This man has the most powerful and amazing vocal range I have ever heard... The highlights of this albumn are Stigmatized, Adrienne and Nothings Changed... one listen and your sure to be belting them out in no time... I fell in love with this albumn even before I had it, I now love this band even more after meeting them and seeing them live twice. If you can, check them out while theyre still playing tiny venues and before you cant see the whites of their eyes... The Advertiser -Sunday Mail - 11 April 2002 With a voice like that, Alex Band was always gong to be a rock and roll singer. Those deep, throaty vocals drive the radio-friendly pop-rock of the Calling. Before the release of Camino Palmero, the Calling was known more for an appearance in the film Coyote Ugly than its musical ability. But on this debut, Band and fellow founder/writer Aaron Kamin display a talent for hook-laden songs, driven by hard-edged guitars and pop melodies in the vein of Lifehouse or Matchbox Twenty. The first single, Wherever You Will Go - currently making its way up the ARIA charts - is a good indication of the depth of this album; generally upbeat tempos masking a somewhat deep lyrical content. Typical of the slower-paced pop-rock becoming so popular once again, the Calling seems to do it just that little bit better than its contemporaries. After this release, it shouldn't be long before before the Calling get past that "the band that was on Coyote Ugly" tag. © 2003-2004 The Calling UK |
